PIONEER RIES IN

August Wilhelm Hartung, 90, retired farmer, died at his home in Fontanelle Monday. He had been in failing health for three years.

Born Feb. 21, 1858 at Quincy, Ill., Hartung came to Nebraska with his parents, brothers and a sister by covered wagon in the fall of 1869. The family stayed with the Henry Krugers until a small home could be constructed on their homestead.

The lumber with which the home was built was purchased in Omaha and transported by horse and wagon to Fontanelle.

Feb. 21, 1883 he married Catherine Elizabeth Franke. He was a member of Salem Lutheran church in Fontanelle.

Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. George Strenger and Martha; three sons, William, Harvey and Elmer, all of Fontanelle; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Plugge and Mrs. Emma Brackett of Fremont and Mrs. Kate Heuerman of Arlington; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two daughters, one sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

A family prayer service is to be held in the Lawson Funeral home chapel in Fremont at 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services are to be at Salem Lutheran church in Fontanelle at 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Ritzen will officiate. Burial is to be in the church cemetery.
