Another Old Soldier Dies

Niles Edward Noyes passed away at 12:30 Sunday afternoon at his home on East Lincoln Street of old age, he being 81 years 4 months and 7 days old. He has been ill for some time but had been able to get out until a few weeks ago.

The funeral service was held at the Baptist Church at 2 o'clock yesterday, Rev. L. J. Morn officiating. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery. The flag was flown at half mass yesterday until after the funeral service in honor of the dead veteran. A beautiful custom now prevailing for there are but a few of them left.

Deceased was born May 2, 1847 in Monroe, Michigan. When but a lad of sixteen years he enlisted in the Co. D, 7th Michigan Vol. Inf. As a drummer boy in 1846 *(this should be 1863) and served to the end of the war in the army of Potomac under General Grant at Richman, Virginia, during this siege of the city near the close of the Civil War. After he was honorably discharge he went to Missouri and was united in marriage to Miss Susan Boltz in Knox County of that state, coming to Blair in 1881, which has been his home for over 47 years. He was a carpenter by trade and served as such until his health began to fail him. He is a member of John A. Dix Post of the GAR and has served in about all the offices including the position of Commander. In recent years there are so few of the members they haven't kept under the regular post meetings. But there are seven resident members left in one, Jas. Smith who lives at the Soldiers Home at Burkett; other resident members are Andrew Jones, Dr. J. B. Hinnchman, Jacob McCracken, Wm. Wilson, A. Sutherland Shelton Peck, Sam Haler.

He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Vesta Bares of Blencoe, Iowa, three sons, Ed and Clyde, both of Blair and Wilbur of Lincoln. He leaves also two sisters, Vesta Tooney of San Diego, California, Mrs. Kate Viele of Norfolk, Nebraska, one brother, Will Noyes of Lincoln, who was with him several days before he died. There are seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Mr. Noyes was a member of the Baptist Church of this city and faithfully attended at its service while his health permitted. He was a kind, loving husband, father, and friend, therefore a good citizen whose departure will be greatly missed by all who know him. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of their many friends.
