#1-29 Dec., 1909 - The Pilot - Sarah Jane (Harmon) Jewell

Mrs. S. Jane Jewell died very suddenly last Thursday, Dec. 24th, while visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Rathmann at Pilger, Neb. She was getting ready to attend the Christmas tree exercises when stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and was conscious for only about half an hour. She seemed to realize the end was near and bade them all good-bye saying, “If it is the Lord’s will it’s all right”. Death came peacefully in about twenty four hours after the hemorrhage begun. The body was brought here Saturday evening, and the funeral held at the Baptist church at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. W. Cabeen officiating. Miss S. Jane Harmon was born in Wisconsin June 16th, 1852, and was married to F. A. Jewell in 1869. Of this union six children were born, four of whom are now living: Mrs. Marian E. Hook, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Auta S. Rathmann, Pilger; Mrs. Ona J. Weitzel, Tekamah; and Sarah C., who lived at home. She also leaves a sister and three brothers. Mrs. Jewell was a kindly Christian soul and inspired love from all who knew her by her gentle ways and self sacrificing life. She lived the eternal life here with man and will now live it with her Maker, where the “many mansions are”.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. JEWELL

Mrs. S. J. Jewell departed this life last Friday at 2:25 p.m. at Pilger, Nebraska, the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Rathmann, whom she has been visiting for some time. The remains were brought to Blair and the funeral was held Sunday.

S. Jane Harmon was born in Wisconsin June 16, 1852, being 57 years, six months and eight days old at the time of her death. In 1869 she was married to F. A. Jewell and to this union were born seven children: Mrs. Marion E. Hook, Portland, Oregon; Wilna H. Jewell, Sterling, Colo.; Mrs. Auta S. Rathmann, Pilger, Neb.; Mrs. Ona Wentzel, Tekamah; Freeman J. and Wealtha A., now deceased, and Sara C. who had made her home with her mother in this city. Deceased also leaves to mourn her loss four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. John Elmore, Alma City, Minn.; Mrs. E. S. Ketcham, Foley, Minn.; Mrs. Catherine Canfield, Grant’s Pass, Oregon; Mrs. E. L. Simpson, Des Moines, Iowa; John Harmon, Foley, Minn.; Charles Harmon, Shell Lake, Wis.; and Edward Harmon, Redwood Falls, Minn.

The death of Mrs. Jewell was very sudden and was caused by cerebral hemorrhage, she being ill only twenty four hours, and although conscious only about half an hour, she expressed her willingness to go, nearly her last words being “If it’s the Lord’s will, it’s all right”.

Her death was particularly sad at this time as she was anticipating a happy Christmas with her children, and a sister who she had not seen for forty years was expecting to visit her on New Years. Mrs. Jewell had been a faithful Christian all her life and been a member of the Baptist church thirty two years. She was a kind and loving mother, always sacrificing her own pleasures for others and will be sadly missed by her family as well as a large circle of friends and neighbors in Blair.
