27 Apr., 1904 - Blair Courier - Mary McConnaha-Latta

Mrs. Mary McConnaha-Latta, who celebrated her 100th birthday anniversary on Sunday, Jan. 31 last, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stephen Davis, northwest of Blair, died Saturday afternoon at her daughter’s residence. On her 100th birthday she sat for a photograph which was reproduced in The Illustrated Bee of February 28. Mrs. Latta was born in Crawford county, Penn. Jan. 31, 1804, and was married to John Latta in 1834, he dying in 1884. They came to Nebraska in the early 50’s. She leaves six children, thirty two grandchildren and fifty three great grandchildren, all of her children and grandchildren still living. She became a member of the Presbyterian church at the age of 14 and adhered to that faith until her death. Her funeral was held on Monday afternoon, and interment made in the New England cemetery. Mrs. Latta was a woman of strong character and wide intelligence. Her memory was good up to the very last and could readily recall events such as the Hamilton-Burr duel and the principal battles of all our wars since the close of the revolution. Some conception of the length of her life may be obtained when we say she lived under every president of the United States except Washington and Adams. This might also serve to remind us how young we are as a nation. At the time of her death she was the oldest person in the county, and now that honor falls on Henry C. Wilkening of Fontanelle township, who was born in 1807.

Note: Her headstone has the spelling of hear maiden name as McConahey. ~~~Obituaries courtesy of the Nebraska Washington County Genealogical Society. Newspaper clippings on file in the Blair, Nebraska Public Library~~~
