Lydia Andersen, daughter of Theodore and Anna (Kyhnn) Vorm was born in rural Audubon County on June 11, 1919, and died at the Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, Nebraska, on October 12, 2020 at the age of 101 years, 4 months and 1 day.
Lydia was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith, and attended Audubon country schools. After school, she went to work for various families as a live-in housekeeper. She met Albert Anderson through friends, and their first date was a barn dance. They were married on February 25, 1939 at the church parsonage in Clarion, Iowa. They were blessed with two children: Ronald and Carol.
They farmed in Hamlin and Sharon Townships until they purchased their farm southeast of Elk Horn, Iowa. Lydia worked very hard helping Albert around the farm doing whatever was needed. During this time, Lydia also worked at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn for several years. They continued farming until they retired.
Lydia and Albert were very active members of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton where they were Luther League sponsors. They always participated in coffee and sandwiches after church, and sometimes let their prank-loving side come out. A few favorites included planting plastic spiders in the sandwiches or nestling a layer of wax paper in between the meat and cheese. She also took part in the quilting circle in the church basement. Lydia did a lot of crocheting, making afghans for most members of her family. They were both involved with 4-H.
Together, Lydia and Albert loved going dancing where they would visit area nursing homes, dancing the polka, and always the chicken dance, where Lydia would “lay” a wooden egg much to everyone’s delight. They hosted many parties on their farm.
Albert died on March 3, 1999 and Lydia continued living on the farm until 2011 when she moved to Blair, Nebraska.
