In Celebration of William Michael (“Mike”) Young

William Michael (“Mike”) Young was born January 11, 1952 in Evansville, Indiana to George and Jo Anne Young. Mike grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky. In April 1971, Mike’s life changed forever when a lovely young woman walked up to him and asked him out. Before he could answer, she smiled and said she was only kidding. She explained that her friend liked him, but that her friend was to afraid to ask him out. So she was just showing her friend “how it was done”. Mike responded that she may have been kidding, but he wasn’t—and he proceeded to ask her out. That is how Mike met the love of his life, Brenda Kay Whitehouse. Just seven months later, on November 26, 1971, Mike and Brenda married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

In December 1971, Mike joined the U.S. Air Force, and shortly thereafter he and Brenda moved to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. As if getting married, joining the Air Force, and moving to a new state within a one-year period of times wasn’t enough excitement for the young couple, in September 1972 they welcomed the birth of their son, Michael. In August 1974 their first daughter, Theresa, joined them. They completed their family in September 1980 with the birth of their youngest daughter, Amanda.

The Air Force allowed Mike and his family to travel across America, and to live in England. Mike and Brenda made the most of their travels, particularly while stationed abroad. They enjoyed taking their family on sight-seeing trips, and they loved searching antique shops for hidden treasures to refurbish. In England they spent many weekends venturing across the country to churches and cathedrals, where Mike and Brenda created brass rubbings while the children scoured the graveyards for the oldest headstone.

In 1994, Mike retired as a Master Sergeant from the Air Force. He continued working in the private sector until his passing, at which time he was working for Woodmen of the World. Mike was an outdoorsman at heart. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. Mike was a man of faith, and a devout Catholic. He served as a Grand Knight and District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus Council #10305. He was also a member of the Fort Calhoun American Legion Post #348.

Mike was taken from us too soon, but he left this world knowing he led a good life, filled with laughter and love. We will carry our memories and love for him in our hearts forever. Mike died on November 12, 2020 at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Young; three children, Michael (Michelle) Young, Theresa (Jason) Kaeding, and Amanda Young; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother, Jo Ann Young; his brother Mark “Buzz” (Laurie) Young; and innumerable other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, George Young.
