#1-7 Nov., 1901 - Blair Courier - George Wardell

Geo. Wardell died of pneumonia at his home near Washington at 4:50 Monday at the age of 61 years. Rev. A. E. Marsh of this city conducted the funeral services at the home at 2:30 yesterday afternoon, burial taking place in the Kennard cemetery. Mr. Wardell was born in Leicestershire, England in 1840 and in 1862 was married to Miss Emma Lambert. Three children, Ada, Harvey and James, were born to them before they came to this country in ’68. They remained at Utica, N.Y. until ’73 when they moved to Elkhorn station, remaining there for about a year when they returned to New York, again coming to Elkhorn in ’75. In ’78 they moved onto the farm they have occupied continuously for twenty three years. Three more children were born to them in this country, Joe, Reuben, who died when three years old, and Lottie. Mrs. Wardell died in April ’96 and Mr. Wardell married Mrs. Jennie Wickham in November ’97, and of this union one son was born. Mr. Wardell was a kind hearted man, a good citizen and many friends sympathize with the now bereaved family.

Geo. Wardell whose death occurred at his home near Washington last Monday, was a native of Lestershire, England. He came to America in 1868, to Douglas county in 1873, had lived on his farm near Washington for twenty three years. His first wife died in 1896. His second wife and child and three sons and two daughters are left to mourn his death. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia resulting from a cold which he took coming home from Canada. The funeral was held at his home Wednesday afternoon, Rector Marsh officiating.
