Funeral services for Dorothy E. Jaspersen, 89, of West Point, were held Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Carl Kramer officiating. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery. Mrs. Jaspersen died Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Living Center in West Point.

Dorothy (Dorothea) Elizabeth Jaspersen was born Oct. 22, 1912, in the rural Bennington area to William and Bertha (Koepke) Voss. She was baptized Jan. 12, 1913, at St. John's German Lutheran Church in Bennington.

She attended Sunny Side Elementary School in Washington County and Blair High School, graduating in 1931. She attended Wayne State Teacher's College, receiving an elementary teaching certificate. She taught at Maney School from 1933 to 1935, and at Long Creek School from 1935 to 1937.

She married Avery L. Jaspersen on June 2, 1937, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington. The couple lived on farms near Kennard, then Tekamah, prior to moving to a farm near Oakland in 1945, where they resided until they moved to West Point in 1976.

After raising her family, she returned to teaching in 1964 at District 33 in Cuming County. She taught there nine years, one year at District 25, and served one year as a teacher's aid in 1976 in District 10 west of West Point.

Mrs. Jaspersen was instrumental in the formation of the Midway Extension Club, and served many years on the Cuming County Extension Board, receiving service awards. She was a Cuming County Extension Chairwoman and a member of the past County Chairman group, and honored as a 50-year extension member. She was also a 4-H Club leader for many years.

With the move to West Point, she became active at Grace Lutheran Church, serving with the Intern Committee, Altar Guild, Joy Circle, Sunday School teacher, being one of the first women to serve on the church council, as well as in many other ways. She lived her Christian faith.

After the couple moved to West Point, Mr. and Mrs. Jaspersen continued HD Card Club with farming neighbors. Mrs. Jaspersen became involved in card groups and coffee friends in town.

She served many years as Open Class Superintendent of Foods at Cuming County Fair, and served a number of years as president and vice president of Federated Women's Club, receiving recognition as Club Women of the Year in 1990. Favorite projects were the Student Art Program and taking high school students to the state legislature.

She enjoyed gathering friends, family and travelers around good food and conversation. She shared of her talents, time and material wealth with others. She was a thoughtful, caring neighbor and friend, always ready to assist when needed. She was a very productive person, an example of growing and changing throughout life. She learned to say "no" and to pass the torch.

She is survived by her children, JoAnn and Armand Matthews of Weatherby Lake, Mo., Judith Robertson of Columbus, Jean Jaspersen-Nagele and Rudolf Nagele of Ulm, Germany, and Jerry and Rosemary Jaspersen of Oakland, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son-in-law, Donald W. Robertson, brothers, John, Wilbert, Wallace and Alvin Voss, and sisters, Catherine Christensen, Wilma Voss and Evelyn Parrish.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Outdoor Paving project, Grace Lutheran Youth Scholarship Endowment, and The Cuming County 4-H Endowment Fund.

Stalp Funeral Home in West Point was in charge of arrangements.
