#1-25 Dec., 1902 - Blair Courier - Jacob Beck

After an illness of several weeks’ duration, Jacob Beck died at his home in this city last Monday afternoon at 1:55 o’clock. Mr. Beck was a man of rare talents and had many friends who will miss his kind advice and charitable work. He was well read, had a wonderful memory and was greatly interested in the upbuilding of humanity, and was also a close student of social and political questions. Deceased was born in Ross county, N.Y. November 27, 1829, making him a little over 73 years old at the time of his death. In his early life he moved to Illinois and settled in Saugamon county and was a prominent speaker on anti slavery and personally acquainted with Abraham Lincoln. He was also an earnest prohibition lecturer and for a number of years traveled extensively in Iowa and Missouri, making prohibition speeches. Deceased came to Nebraska in the spring of 1880, and settled on a farm about four miles from Decatur. His first wife died a number of years ago and he leaves six children, Mrs. Phelps, who resides on the home place; C. F. Beck, an instructor in the Peru normal; E. D. Beck, at present a county commissioner in Burt county; Mrs S. S. Farrens and Mrs. W. B. Watson, also of Burt county, and Fred Beck, now residing in Omaha. Some time in 1893 Mr. Beck married Mary A. Cuppy and made his home in this city up to the time of his death. The funeral was held Tuesday in Decatur.

The death of Jacob Beck of this city occurred last Monday afternoon after a protracted illness of chief ailment being Bright’s disease. Mr. Beck was a pioneer to Nebraska and a leader hereabouts in the cause of socialism, having written widely and talked on many occasions in the interest of this branch of the politics of our country. He was strong in his faith in spiritualism, an honest thinker and good neighbor. He was for several years president of the Blair Horse Collar Mfg. Co. and leaves his family well fixed financially. He was widely known and leaves many friends who extend sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
