26 May, 1898 - Pilot - Henry H. R. Schumacher

Died at the hospital in Omaha Tuesday morning at 1:00 o’clock, Henry Schumacher, aged 49 years, 7 months and 26 days. Mr. Schumacher was born in Germany and remained there until he was eighteen years of age when he decided to emigrate to America. So poor was his circumstances at that time that his friends must necessarily lend him aid. This was promptly given by John J. Sierk, now of Calhoun. For three years Mr. Schumacher lived in the vicinity of Calhoun, but in 1869 he moved to the present homestead one and one half miles south of Kennard where he and his family resided the balance of his days. On every occasion Mr. Schumacher was noted for his generosity. His neighbors or friends needing assistance never appealed to him in vain. When Mr. and Mrs. Carlson were burned out in Minnesota last autumn it was Mr. Schumacher who headed a petition in their behalf with $25.00. To Mr. and Mrs. Schumacher five children have been born, two boys surviving. One, August 25 years old; the other, Chris 17 years, both kind, good hearted sons. Something like a month ago Mr. Schumacher had a bad spell, but lasting only a day no physician was summoned, but the attack happened again last week, Wednesday, and on Thursday Mr. Schumacher was removed to the hospital and an operation for appendicitis ordered on Saturday. He seemed to do nicely after the operation up to Sunday night when he began to grow worse. His folks were notified and as soon as possible hurried to the hospital. They found Mr. Schumacher too weak to speak, but conscious of all that was going on. He lingered until early Tuesday morning when he answered to the last great call. He was removed to his home and from there the funeral was conducted, and we might say here one of the largest funerals ever held in this county. There were over five hundred people at the house and about three hundred followed the remains to the Blair cemetery. Mr. Schumacher thirty two years ago came to this country without a dollar and on borrowed money. By industry, economy and perseverance, he has accumulated about him quite a considerable wealth. He leaves a fine 360 acre farm entirely paid for as an inheritance to his wife and sons and the support of his aged father who has late years made his home with his son. About the highest tribute that can be paid to any man is that he is loved by all his neighbors and truly this can be said of Mr. Schumacher.
