#1-EARL F. JENKINS, 89 Earl F. Jenkins, 89, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in Lincoln. Private family services have been slated.

A celebration of his life will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15, with the University Singers in Concert at Kimball Recital Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

Earl F. "Pete" Jenkins was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Tilden and was raised in Blair. He was a 1942 music graduate of the University of Nebraska. He was a World War II naval officer; and later served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, achieving the rank of captain.

He taught in Bloomfield and Columbus before beginning his 33 years at the University of Nebraska, teaching voice and directing the University Singers and choruses.

He received mnany awards and honors inclding the Cornell Runestad Lifetime Service to Choral Music in 2005 and the Doc Elliott Award in 2002, presented by the Nebraska Alumni Association. He was inducted into the Nebraska Music Educators' Hall of Fame in 1995. He received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1978 and University Builders' Awards in 1975 and 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Steve Herndon and Mary and Vaughn Fritts; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Deb Jenkins and Jim and Kathy Jenkins; 11 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Warren C. and Joan Jenkins; numbers of former students and hosts of friends.

The Earl "Pete" Jenkins Endowment Fund has been established in support of the University School of Music choral programn. Contributions should be sent to the University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, Suite 300, Lincoln, NE 68508, and should be designated for the Jenkins Fund.
