28 Nov., 1901 - The Pilot - Vivian Higley

For two weeks the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Higley lingered at death’s door, suffering from an attack of scarlet fever of the most malignant form. For nearly a week the doctors were fearful of the result and while they held out but little hope, yet everything possible was done to save the little life. Certainly Mr. and Mrs. Higley had had their full share of trouble and the sympathy of their friends go out to them in the awful trial they have been forced of late to pass through. No one but a parent can realize what it means, and only those who have had some innocent little one snatched from them can fully realize the severity of the blow.

5 Dec., 1901 - The Pilot - Vivian Higley

Words are empty and few realize the strain upon Mrs. Higley, an invalid herself bearing the burden alone in the last illness of her little daughter, Vivian, feeling each moment that she must collapse. The Higley family have had their cup filled to overflowing, having been called upon to mourn the loss of a father, mother and three children: Clarence, Carlisle and Vivian. Vivian was a few months past seven and the idol, not only of the household, but of the neighbors, and among the school children she was a great favorite. She was a sweet dispositioned child, and so far wove herself into the love of all who knew her that her departure from life was a sad blow to many and robed many a heart of a glad Thanksgiving. Her sickness dated from about the middle of November when she went home from school feeling ill and continued to grow worse until thanksgiving morning when she died. She was buried in the afternoon and the brightest ray in the Higley home went out forever.

Courier 5 Dec 1901

Little Vivian Higley quietly passed away on Thanksgiving morning and owing to the nature of the disease was buried the same afternoon. This is the third child Mr. and Mrs. Higley have lost and it almost seems more than they can bear. Mrs. Higley has collapsed entirely and was taken to the hospital in Omaha Tuesday, while Harry is almost overcome with grief. The entire city mourns with them in this sad bereavement.
