7 Nov., 1901 - The Pilot - Mrs. Charles Rathjen

Mrs. Charles Rathjen, who was buried in the Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska cemetery Oct. 31, 1901, was a noble, industrious Christian woman, and with her husband owned one of the most beautiful homes in the city. She was childless, but had many friends among the children and young people, the latter often consulting her over their party and wedding dresses. Our wife, when living, often spoke of her and respected her highly. She was born in Germany 48 years ago, and died of tumor, having announced to her friends just before going to the hospital at Omaha that her end was near, and like a very prudent woman arranged all her domestic affairs as far as possible, and left her husband whom she loved so devotedly as little care as possible. The Congregational church was crowded with her friends and the coffin covered with beautiful hot house flowers. Rev. Gloede, the Lutheran pastor of Bennington, preached the sermon, Miss Grace Vaughan presided at the organ and Mrs. Dr. Pettingill, Arthur Bauman, Henry Schwager and his sister, Lena, composed the choir. The pallbearers were Carl Feldhusen, Henry Gherke, Peter Smith, Henry Rix and John Hendrickson of Ft. Calhoun and Frank Matthiessen of Blair; T. M. Carter of Blair, director. Charles Rathjen one of the most lovable of men certainly has the sympathy of all who know him.
