Sylvester (Sgt) Beezley

#1-14 July, 1909 - The Pilot - Sylvester Beezley - Civil War Veteran

Sylvester Beezley, a former Washington county resident, died in Omaha last week at the advanced age of 72 years. He was an old soldier, having fought through the civil war with Grant and Sherman. He came to this county at the close of the war and settled on a homestead in Cuming City township. Later he moved to Blair and was the first overseer of the poor farm when the present farm was bought. He then removed to Omaha ad went into the hotel business where the U.S. National bank now stands corner 16th and Farnam streets. He leaves a widow and four married daughters, Mrs. Peter Jessen, Mrs. Sarah A. Plummer, Mrs. Dora A. Ratekin, all of Omaha, and Mrs. Wm. H. Whitney of Independence, Ia. He has been an invalid for some years, partial paralysis and blindness rendering him almost helpless.

Sylvester Beasley, 72 years old, residing at 4703 North Sixteenth street, died Sunday night at 8:28 from troubles, which he contracted during the civil war. Mr. Beasley was born in Bedford, Ind., and answered his country's call for troops in 1862. He was with Sherman in his march to the sea and saw service until the close of the war. Shortly after the close of the war, Mr. Beasley took up a homestead at Cuming City, Neb., where he lived for many years and then moved to Omaha where he conducted a large boarding and lodging house at Sixteenth and Farnam streets which was afterwards turned into a city hall. Recently Mr. Beasley has been partially paralyzed and almost helpless.

He is survived by his wife, who is 70 years old, and four married daughters, Mrs. Clara E. Jessen, wife of Peter Jessen, jr., Mrs. William H. Whitney of Independence, Ia., Mrs. Dora Ratekin of Omaha and Mrs. Sarah A. Plumber of Omaha.

The funeral will probably be held Wednesday under the auspices of the Grand Army of the Republic with interment at Forest Lawn cemetery.
