2 Dec., 1908 - The Tribune - Bishop Joy - Civil War Veteran - P.O.W.

Bishop Joy died at his home in Herman on Thursday morning, Nov. 26, at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 20 days. Mr. Joy came to Herman in 1868 and has lived there continuously ever since. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, there sons and three daughters, Chas. W. of Blair, Andrew M. of Herman, Warren and Mrs. C. A. Hansen of Bancroft, and Mrs. Chris F. Speck and Mrs. Burt Leonard of Tekamah. Mr. Joy was mustered into the service of the Union army a member of Co. E., 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1862, and was mustered out in the fall of 1865. During the service he was captured and served time in the prison at either Andersonville or at Tyler, Texas. Mr. Joy had had a bad night, but got up feeling as well as usual, and went out of doors. A few minutes later he was found helpless and died before he could be brought into the house. The funeral was held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. In the death of Mr. Joy the county loses a good citizen and a man who was a friend of the friendless. Many friends extend sympathy to the family in their affliction.
