5 Oct., 1910 - The Tribune - Henry D. Schneider

Henry D. Schneider, an old time resident of Washington county, committed suicide by shooting at his home in Bennington last Tuesday. Mr. Schneider had suffered with cancer of the stomach for a number of years, and of late had been so bad that he could not eat anything and it was either a case of starving to death or taking the course he did, and being a man of great courage, decided that the quicker the end came the better. Henry D. Schneider was born in Schleswig, Germany May 28, 1834. He came to Washington county in 1859 and settled on a farm in Richland township, where he has been a farmer over forty seven years. He was sheriff of Washington county from 1885 to 1891. The funeral services were held from the home at Bennington Friday at 12 o’clock and at the German hall in Richland township at 1 o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. Jacob Hauck of Omaha, and the remains interred in the German cemetery adjoining the hall. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Washington county.
