Joseph Ray, who has been very poorly all winter, passed away at his home four miles southeast of Herman Tuesday night. His ailment seemed to be a complication of rheumatism and old age. The funeral was held Thursday, March 17, 1910, at Tekamah, Rev. L. W. McKibbin, pastor of the German M.E. church having charge. Joseph Ray was born in Lawrence county, Indiana June 14, 1833. Mr. Ray was twice united in marriage, the first wife being Miss Nancy Meyers, who died October 25, 1868. Of this union three daughters survive. They are Mrs. Susie Bowden, Mrs. Lurickey Smith, Mrs. Hetty Davis. On September 26, 1869 he was married to Miss Angeline Bowden, and of this marriage nine children survive their father. The children are Mrs. Mary York, Mrs. Anna Myers, Mrs. Cora Parrish, Nellie Peterson, Mrs. Grace Crutsinger, Ralph, Fred, Clifford and Glen Ray. Besides these children, there are forty three grandchildren. Mr. Ray was one of the oldest settlers in this community, was well beloved by his neighbors and acquaintances, who will miss his kindly face and pleasant greeting. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the community in their loss.
