20 Mar., 1912 - The Tribune - John Hansen

At his home in Dexterville Sunday evening occurred the death of John Hansen, well known in Blair and Washington county. Mr. Hansen, who had been enjoying good health all winter and felt good throughout the day, after eating super about eight o’clock retired. About nine o’clock Mrs. Hansen retired and they talked a few moments, when Mr. Hansen declared he was not feeling well. His wife arose and called others of the household. It was thought best to call a physician, but the sick man said he was all right, and it was decided not to call anyone. In a few moments a convulsion came and death followed almost immediately, caused by heart trouble.

Deceased was born in Lorup, Denmark May 20, 1844, making his age a little less than 68 years. He came to America in 1865 or ’66, settling for a short time in Wisconsin; then he came to Omaha, and during the building of the U.P. road he worked as a carpenter in the construction of depots and hotels along the line through to Denver.

In June, 1869 he was married to Miss Mary Paulsen, and to this union eight children were born. One died in infancy. The second son, Edward, died at the age of 21.

In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Hansen settled on a farm in Washington county eight miles west of Blair, remaining there nineteen years, when they moved to Omaha, and after a residence there of three years they settled in Blair, or Dexterville, which is still the family home.

The life of the deceased was a success and all who knew him regret his sudden taking away.

The three surviving sons, Charles, William and Jesse, are prosperous farmers in Washington county. Emma, the oldest daughter, is Mrs. John Toft of Arlington. Clara is Mrs. Martin Rasmussen. They reside in Alberta, Canada. Lizzie is Mrs. Wynn Baer of Blair. Together, with the widow, these remain to mourn the loss of husband and father. It was impossible of course for those residing in Canada to be present at the funeral, which occurred today (Wednesday) at 9:30 at the Danish church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. N. P. Lund. The remains were taken to Orum for burial and there a short service was conducted.

A SUDDEN DEATH

John Hansen died suddenly last Sunday evening of heart failure. He seemed as well as usual when he went to bed at about 9 o’clock, and for half an hour afterwards. Then the tired heart began to give way, and at 10 o’clock had ceased to beat entirely. The funeral was to have been held today, but owing to the storm was postponed to Friday. A short service will be held at the home in Dexterville at 9 o’clock, another service at 9:30 at the Danish church of which he was a member, and at 2 o’clock the final service will be held at the Danish church at Orum where burial will take place. Mr. Hansen was born in Denmark and came to America in 1866. He was married to Miss Mary Paulsen in Omaha in 1869, and came to this county in 1871 where he lived for nineteen years. He then moved to Omaha and remained there but three years, moving to this city in 1894. Six of their eight children are now living. Charles, William and Jesse are on farms out near the old place; Mrs. John Toft of Arlington; Mrs. Martin Rasmussen of Settler, Alberta Canada; and Mrs. Wynn Baer, who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Hansen in Dexterville.

NOTE: The last name “Baer” was misspelled in all the obituaries. In the obituaries is was spelled “Bear”.
