EARLY SETTLER IN LAUREL AREA BURIED

Laurel, Neb.—Special: Death claimed Charles F. Obermeyer, 76, early settler, who came to this community in 1885, after coming to Nebraska with his parents from Westphalia, Germany, in 1877. He was born there October 8, 1869. Mr. Obermeyer died at his home here Monday evening of a heart ailment and complications after several years’ illness. The family lived near Fremont before moving to a farm south of Laurel in 1884.

There he met and later married Miss Anna Hirchert on May 1, 1890. They resided on farms in this vicinity for 33 years, enduring the hardships of early days. He broke prairie, lived in a dugout, and sometimes walked to Sioux City, a distance of 45 miles, over trails, to trade, they having no horses for transportation. His wife and one son, Herman of Laurel, and a grandson, Elwin Obermeyer, whom they reared, survive. Also surviving are eight other grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother, Fred, of Laurel.

Funeral rites were held Thursday at the St. John’s Lutheran church, Rev. H. Niederwimmer, Coleridge, officiating. Burial was in the cemetery.
