Marine, bricklayer and believer

Fred D. Dunkle, 80, of Kennard, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. Interment will be in the Kennard Cemetery.

Fred DuWayne Dunkle was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Little Sioux, Iowa, to Louise (Powell) and Floyd Dunkle. He attended rural grade school near Little Sioux, Iowa, Washington, Blummer Grade School, and attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from South High in Omaha in 1948.

He joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and received his training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was stationed in Japan where he taught demolition and minor warfare. He was in the service three years and left the service as a staff sergeant.

He was a bricklayer by trade and also farmed near Kennard.

He married Marilyn Rix on April 3, 1955.

Mr. Dunkle was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church since 1956 and held several different offices in the church. He was on the Kennard Rural Fire Department Board for more than 30 years; was a member of the Kennard Legion for more than 55 years; and served on the Good Shepherd Home Board.

Mr. and Mrs. Dunkle enjoyed playing cards, going to country western music festivals and taking bus trips throughout the United States and numerous cruises and camping trips.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Michael Hinrichs of Blair, Patti and Rodney Bailar of Kearney, and Lori and Todd Enfield of North Mankato, Minn.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Vicki Dunkle of Blair; seven granddaughters and four grandsons, Brandi, Brent and Briana Bailar, Angie and husband, Nick Albrecht, Kaja and husband, Tony Walters, April and Dana Enfield, Matt, Andy, Blake and Mikaela Dunkle; three step-grandchildren, Tim Hinrichs, Nathan and wife, Leigh Hinrichs, Ben Hinrichs; three great-grandchildren, Cadence Bailar, Trenton Mauler, Isaiah Walters; sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Marvin Golter of Pilot Rock, Ore.; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Calderon of Omaha.

Memorials are suggested to Emmaus Lutheran Church and the Kennard Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Funeral Service Tuesday 10:30am at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. Burial will be in the Kennard Cemetery. Visitation begins 2pm Monday at the Funeral Home, with family receiving friends 6-8pm, Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard.
