Dorothy Elizabeth Wright of Blair, Nebraska died Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Born in Allendorf, Iowa on January 24, 1920, she attended public school in Sibley and graduated from Sibley High School in 1937. Continuing her education at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, she studied at the Morningside Conservatory of Music and achieved a Bachelor of School Music degree. During college, she was honored with membership to select choral groups; Mu Phi Epsilon, the Music honorary. She was elected to Student Council; and President of the Dormitory. As a Senior, Dorothy was President of the Women’s Self-Governing Association and named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She graduated in 1942 and accepted a teaching position in Linn Grove, Iowa.

In November, 1942, Dorothy married Harold Wright, a fellow Morningside music student. His pursuit of a general contracting career with Korshoj Construction Company in Blair, Nebraska led to moving their family from Sioux City, Iowa to Blair in 1950.

As a new resident, Dorothy began to contribute her talents to the community. She taught piano, led winning 4-H song groups, became Director of the Chancel choir at the First Methodist Church, and formed a Chapel choir of young voices, a position she held for 13 years. In the 1950’s, she initiated a summer recreation program for girls, featuring sports and cultural activities. She gathered neighborhood children to perform in a summer circus that was open to the public and raised funds toward a new Blair hospital.

In 1963, approached by Superintendent B.E. Krantz to teach high school English, she quickly achieved full certification and taught for ten years. Her teaching success revealed her ability to teach student teachers. She later joined the faculty of the Humanities Department at Dana College, and taught teaching methods to Dana students. Dorothy served on the Blair Board of Education, 1976 - 1985.

Throughout her life, she was active in the Methodist Church and P.E.O., a philanthropic organization supporting education for women. In retirement, Dorothy and Harold saw the world, hiking and back-packing. Travels included Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, Nepal, the Galapagos and South America. At home, they volunteered to help develop the Danish American Archives.

Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Harold G. Wright; parents Glen Jones and Eva Thomas. She is survived by her brother, James L. Jones; daughters, Mary Beth Frieden, Susan Pickett and Barbara Wright; grandchildren: Charles Frieden, Katherine (Pickett) Bevins, Harold Frieden and Mollie (Pickett)Parde; and five great-grandchildren. She is further survived by nine nieces and nephews and their families. Memorials are requested for the Salvation Army, The Morningside College Scholarship Fund, and the Methodist Church.
