Bernie was born in Blair, Nebraska on March 8th, 1933 to Ben and Charlotte Bergman. He had four brothers: Byron, Ralph, Don and Bruce.

Bernie graduated from Bennington High School in 1951 and began working for Northwestern Bell that summer. In 1953, he was drafted into the Army where he was assigned to the 553rd Engineer Battalion as an electrician in the Korean War.

After he was discharged from the Army in the summer of 1955, he met Lynn Achenbach, and married her on May 29th, 1959. They had one daughter, Kim Spurgeon.

Upon his retirement, he started his own company, B & W Communications. After his successful business venture, he officially retired in 2012. In April 2013, he and Lynn moved to Omaha to be closer to their daughter.

In his younger years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed carpentry and loved to help a friend or neighbor with a project.
