28 Feb., 1895 - The Pilot - Fred Douglas

Death date estimated

Fred Douglas died as we want to die, right in the harness. Fred Douglas had as all men have, his foibles, but he has done much to elevate his race both black and white. Born a slave, insulted and abused, it is hardly possible that he could avoid very many serious mistakes. Too often his mothers inheritance was adjudged a crime and too many people consider a black skin a felony.

But never would we shut the gates, of heaven or knowledge To white or black or red or copper skin, But rather help increase the power of wisdom, truth and all things good. Cheer up the weak and praise the strong.
