The funeral of the aged Mrs. Beales was conducted from the schoolhouse this afternoon, Rev. Power of Blair officiating. Among the pallbearers were Rice Arnold, John W. Tew, E. Castetter, Col. Theodore Haller and E. H. Clark, Blair; E. N. Grenell and others, Calhoun. Thirty two years of her thirty four years in Nebraska were spent in this city and neighborhood, and the last two in Blair. Her two sons live near here and her only daughter in Blair. Her age was 87. She was born and married in England, and the writer and her late husband, as well as Mrs. Beales were warm friends for years, and it may be a surprise to some of our readers to know that we never heard evil spoken of either one. In the hard winter of 1856-7, Mr. Beales and the boys went to Missouri with the cattle, leaving Mrs. Beales and the two little girls living where Henry Paulsen now lives. She kept her cow in a summer kitchen at the side of the house and one morning found it frozen to death standing on its feet, and a few years later Mrs. B. and her daughters planted all the trees that a few years ago were a well known landmark on the block west of our office. Since the death of my own mother a year ago, we have always called upon Mother Beales when in Blair and generally found her active and always cheerful.
