MYSTERIOUS DEATH

Last Friday morning, as the train on the O. & N.W. R.R. coming north when near the line between Douglas and Washington counties, the body of a man was discovered lying on the track. The train was stopped and upon investigation it was found that the man was none other than George Oberst, an old settler of this county, living southeast of Mills Station. The man had been dead for some time and as there were no marks or indications of fowl play, it was at once determined that he had died a natural death, very suddenly, while walking on the track. The body was placed on the train and brought to Mills Station and upon the return of the train to Omaha, Friday afternoon, Conductor Herman notified Coroner Gish of Douglas county who came up Saturday to hold an inquest. Coroner Pierce of this county had also been notified and went down, and upon examination of the facts, it was ascertained that the body had been found in Douglas county.

In the examination before the coroner’s jury, it was proved that Oberst had intended to go down to Stoltenberg’s in the edge of Douglas county, to see about some corn, but beyond this nothing could be learned. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death from some unknown cause.

DEATHS

Funeral services at the DeSoto Mills school house. Sermon by W. R. Eller from Heb. 12:14.

The man was found dead near the railroad track and taken up by Mr. Herman, the conductor of the G. & N.W. train at some distance below the mills. The cause of his death is unknown. His personal appearance was that of a man of strong, robust body and good health. He had no family, and but few relatives in this state, and leaves considerable property gained by hard toil, but never to be enjoyed by him. “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away."
