AN OLD SETTLER GONE

Last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock the spirit of Mr. E.C. Bugeon departed this earth. The deceased had been ailing for some little time and during the past week death was expected at most any minute. The last time the old gentleman was able to leave his home was election day, when he accompanied Jim Wilds to the polls to cast his last vote for a national ticket. From the excitement and shock of this trip, it is thought that he rapidly grew worse, until the end came.

E. C. Bugeon was born at Bern, Switzerland, Dec. 26, 1807. His boy hood days were spent in his native country, where he served for a time in the standing army of Switzerland. Deceased was a plumber by trade, at which he worked for some time before leaving his native country, and a great deal of time during his early life was spent in the Alps mountains. After leaving Switzerland and staying a few years in Russia, the deceased came over to this country in 1849 and landed at Utica, N. Y., where he resided about two years and where he was the proprietor of a cheese factory. While at Utica he married Miss Margaret Quildort and one child was born to them at that place. In about the year '51 he with his family moved to Chicago, where they resided three years and where another child was born. After leaving Chicago, Mr. Bugeon came direct to Nebraska and settled on his DeSoto farm which he has occupied ever since.

The deceased was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Washington county and his loss is mourned by a wife, two children and a host of friends. The one son, Ferdinand Bugeon, is now in business in this city and is well known to the people of Blair. The daughter, who is now Mrs. C. P. Thomas, is a resident of Frontenac, Kas., and was present at the funeral. Services were conducted Tuesday morning at ten o'clock from the family residence, Rev. Geo. Williams officiating, and the remains were interred in the Blair cemetery. The funeral procession was a long one and contained many sorrowful faces of old-time residents of DeSoto and neighbors of the deceased. The remaining members of the family håve the entire sympathy of the community.
