Born Nov. 6, 1823, died July 5, 1897, aged 73 years, 8 months, John E.Pettingill

Mr. Pettingill was born in Lincoln County, Maine where he lived until grown up. In 1868 he moved to Washington County, Nebraska where he has since lived. Mr. Pettingill was for many years a school teacher and in the states of Maine, Illinois, California, Nevada and Nebraska he has held first grade certificates. He has left one brother, Uncle Billy, younger than himself and one sister now nearly eighty years old living back in Illinois. The funeral services were held from the house Wednesday at 10:30 and were conducted by Dr. Armstrong. For some time Mr. Pettingill has been seriously ailing and while his death was not entirely unexpected yet it draws from the many friends sympathy for the kind old man who has gone before.
