January 30, 1899- The Pilot- Harriet (Barnes) Newman

The death of Mrs. John Newman occurred last Friday at 11 o’clock p.m.. Mrs. Newman was born in Tompkins County, New York, in 1819, and received her early education at Lockport, N.Y., later attending Oberlin college in Ohio four years, from which she graduated. In 1845 she married to John Newman, a young lawyer, who, when the Civil war broke out enlisted and was major for some time. Three children were born to them, two girls and one boy, Mrs. Kiff of Rising City, Nebr., and Mrs. A.M. Schumacher of this city. The sudden death of her only son occurred in ’64 being shot while doing captain’s duty in the war, from this blow she never recovered, even to the day of her death. Her husband died soon after the close of the war. In 1880 she was brought west by her daughter, Mrs. Schumacher, for her health, which was very poor, her disease being the dreaded consumption which slowly ate her life away. She has been in poor health for years, but being possessed of a robust constitution kept up but when la grippe set in, she succumbed. She was attended in her last illness by her daughters, and talked so much of going home and was very anxious to go, saying that her lifework was done. She certainly saw visions, for looking up she would say, “Don’t you see them? How beautiful!” Mrs. Newman was an active worker in the W.C.T.U., being an ardent admirer of the late Frances Willard. Her life was one of entire consecration, being a member of the Congregational church since her girlhood, and truly it may be said that her life was a Godly one, ever looking to the higher power for guidance in all things. The funeral occurred yesterday at 2:30 at the residence, where a large gathering of friends and neighbors sympathized with the remaining members of the family. The Pilot joins the community in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones in their loss, but what is their loss is her gain.
