August 25, 1898- The Pilot- George W. Van Deusen

One of the saddest events that has happened for sometime in the community was the death of George Van Deusen which occurred last Monday night at his home west of town. George was sick only about four days with that dreaded disease appendicitis. The boy suffered intensely from the first attack and Monday evening was operated on by Dr. Pruner of Kennard. The operation was very successful, but conditions were such that the young life could not be saved and he passed away in most excruciating pain. George was eleven years old and a very bright and interesting little boy, old beyond his years and a favorite with everyone with whom he came in contact. The funeral was from the residence yesterday at 2 p.m., Rev, Schaffer of Kennard officiating. The family has the sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances who regret deeply that a boy so young and yet so promising must be taken away. The two boys in the Volunteer service- Claud and D.C.- were unable to be present at the funeral and Miss Lena is on a sick bed. A large number of neighbors attended the funeral making it one of the largest ever conducted from that neighborhood.
