June 19, 1899- The Pilot- James Elliott “J.E.” Hawkins

The family of J.E. Hawkins living four miles west of Herman, were preparing to eat the evening meal when the storm broke upon them. The father, Mr. Hawkins, was carried to the barn and thrown into a haystack which caught fire from a stove that had been carried there. His remains were removed after the storm but a charred mass. The daughter, a young lady, had her back seriously injured while the mother and three small children were unhurt in the cellar.
