September 29, 1938- Fort Calhoun Chronicle- August Schroeder

In the death of August Schroeder, which occurred at his home here Sunday morning, Sept. 25, this community loses one of its most respected citizens. His death came suddenly, presumably from a stroke which came upon him as he slept. Some time ago grain had been stolen from the building on his farm formerly used as a residence and Saturday Mr. Schroeder retired for the night in that building, evidently fearing that more grain might be stolen. The family became alarmed at his failure to appear at the residence Sunday morning and when they investigated he was found peacefully asleep in death. His passing is regretted by the entire community, for during his residence here of thirty three years he had by his industry in farming, his absolute integrity and his good citizenship earned the respect and esteem of all.

He was born in Fargau in Gutsaltzer, Germany on March 12, 1863 and in the spring of 1880 he came to America and was employed by Nicholas Rix for a short time, and later moved to Sarpy County where he worked until he became engaged in farming with his brother and sister. On March 14, 1885 he was married to Marie Rudolph, and to this union was born four children; Rosie Iverson who preceded him in death in 1928 and Mrs. Henry Neuhouse of Leigh, Nebr; and two sons, John and Fred of Ft. Calhoun. He is also survived by his wife and six grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Paul of Pipestone, Minn., and Mrs. Gauer of Louisville, Nebr.

In the year of 1892 he and his family moved to Leigh, where they resided until March, 1905 he moved to Ft. Calhoun to the farm which is now known as the Dey farm, and in the year of 1919 he moved to his present home.

The largely attended funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Donaldson being the officiating minister. Burial was in the Ft. Calhoun Cemetery.
