Barbara was born in Kennard, NE; the oldest of 3 children to Alice and Harold Schafer. She attended North High School followed by Doane College before starting a 10-year career at Northern Natural Gas during which time she met her first husband, James Allen Roberts, who was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base.

Following Jim's death in 1967, Barbara raised her children for the next 20 years and was an extraordinary single parent.
