Dorothy “Evelyn” Kruse was born on April 23, 1937. The only child of Porter and Marjorie (Swank) Fluckey, she was raised on a farm in Afton, Iowa. After graduating from Afton High School in 1955, she moved to Omaha. She worked as an administrative assistant and enjoyed traveling with friends.

Evelyn met Richard Kruse of Fort Calhoun and they were married in 1967 at Kountze Memorial Church in Omaha. They moved to the Fort Calhoun/Blair area in 1977, where they built their home and raised their children, Jay, Janet, and Jodi.

Evelyn was very active in her children's activities. She supported them through various music lessons, sports, 4-H and much more. She was an avid Husker fan and loved watching sports. She herself played Iowa 6-on-6 basketball in high school.

Evelyn had a talent for creating beautiful quilts, and her family will cherish all the special quilts she made for each of them. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, playing Wheel of Fortune on her phone and was an avid reader of novels. She loved researching family genealogy, connecting with relatives all over the country. She absolutely loved bird watching and especially enjoyed her bluebirds. She enjoyed baking and we all loved her homemade strawberry jam, raspberry pies, and her homemade ice cream.

Evelyn adored her grandchildren. She beamed with excitement when they would come visit her, she was able to watch them play sports, celebrate birthdays, or be there at graduations. She tried her best to be tech-savvy and would Facetime and text with them as much as possible.

Even though her health had declined these last few months, her mind stayed sharp. Evelyn never met a stranger, she remembered everything about everyone, and was very good about keeping in touch. Evelyn will be remembered through her warm smile, kind heart and giving nature. Evelyn passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on May 27th, 2022.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Richard Kruse. Her children: Jay (Tanya) Kruse of Los Gatos, CA, Janet (Dan) Sellon of Lincoln, NE and Jodi (Michael) Scoggins of New Bern, NC and her grandchildren: Chet and Audrey Kruse (CA), Addy, Barrett and Braden Sellon (NE), and Avery and Reid Scoggins (NC).

Services were held at Blair Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 31, at 11 am. Burial was held at the Ft. Calhoun Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church of Blair.
