DEATH OF MRS. JOSEPH MELVARD

After a short illness, Mrs. Joseph Melvard passed away at her home on Third Street, at 6:00 o’clock Tuesday evening, December 17, aged 72 years and eight months. The funeral was held this (Thursday) afternoon from the M.E. church, Rev. G.M. Couffer officiating. Interment took place in the Arlington cemetery, beside the remains of two sons who preceded her to the other world several years ago, Anton and John.

Mary Caroline Hundlies was born in Ronove City, Bohemia, May 1, 1840, where she resided for 33 years. At the age of 20 years in 1860, she was married to Joseph Melvard, and in 1873 they came to the United States and settled in Washington County, residing here ever since except two years when they resided in Fremont. She has resided in the home in which she died for 37 years. Eight children-five boys and three girls- were born to them, she being survived, besides the husband, by three boys and three girls. The deceased lady was known to almost everybody living in this city, and until only a short time ago, was able to be about. She was taken sick about five weeks ago, and a few days ago her condition became so alarming that the children residing elsewhere were notified of her serious condition and they hurried to the bedside as fast as steam could bring them and were privileged to see her once more before death took her.

The surviving children are Mrs. Henry Peters, Mrs. Wm. Olson, Wm. and Ralph Melvard of Arlington, Louis Melvard, of Norfolk, Nebr. and Mrs. Leonard Werz, of Emerson, Nebr.
