May 29, 1930- Arlington Review Herald- Frederick William Gnuse

Another old pioneer, Frederick William Gnuse passed away. Mr. Gnuse was born July 15, 1844 at Brake, Westphalia, Germany. There he was also baptized in his infancy, reared in a Christian school, and confirmed in his Christian faith.

In 1865 he came to America with his parents, landing at New Orleans. From there the family went to Quincy, Ill., where the departed worked at the carpenter trade until he moved to Nebraska in 1874. In 1871 Mr. Gnuse was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Grelle. In this happy union seven children were born, five sons and two daughters. Three sons, Henry, William and Herman preceded the father in death; also his wife, who died four years ago. From the time he came to Washington County he was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, with the exception of about seventeen years when he lived with his wife at Fremont, and was there a member of Trinity Lutheran church. In both congregations, Mr. Gnuse served for a number of years as a church elder.

About three years ago he made his home with his son, Mr. Simon Gnuse. About two months ago he went to his son, Mr. John F. Gnuse at Fremont where he died in faith in his Savior last Saturday night at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 9 days. He leaves four children, Mrs. Herman Echtenkamp of Wayne, Nebr.; Mr. John Gnuse of Fremont, Nebr., Mrs. Louis Dunklau and Mr. Simon Gnuse of Arlington, two sons-in-law, four daughters-in-law, twenty three grand children and five great grand children.

Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. G.W. Wolter, last Tuesday at one o’clock at Fremont, and at 2:30 at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, with a very large attendance. His pastor spoke of the favorite Scripture passage of the departed, 2 Tim. 1: 12 “I have a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is much better.” St. Paul’s Octet and the school children sang. Interment was made at St. Paul’s cemetery where the departed now rests beside his dear wife until the glorious day of the resurrection unto eternal life.
