Iowa Man Is Killed at Camp Fontanelle

An Iowa man died Sunday afternoon following a sledding accident at Camp Fontanelle near Arlington.

John H. Chadwick, 71, of Anita, Iowa, reportedly died of head injuries after his sled struck a tree at the camp near Nickerson. He was one of about 40 persons with the Omaha Walking Club group staying at the camp.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department said that they had received a call about the accident Sunday and had contacted Nickerson about taking about taking the call. Nickerson apparently does not have a Rescue Squad, a department spokesman said, so Fremont Rescue Squad took the call instead.

Chadwick was taken to Memorial Hospital of Dodge County. He died in the emergency room shortly before 3 p.m., according to an emergency room spokeswoman.

Other reports on the accident indicate that Chadwick was sledding on a small southern incline, covered with ice and snow, adjacent to the lodge between 1-2 p.m. with a group of persons when he struck a tree. He was alone on the sled.

Sledding is not an organized activity at the camp, and members had brought their own sleds. The club has visited the camp for many years, several times a year, on outings.

Funeral services were pending at Mullen Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa, on Monday.
