SHOT BY BROTHER, ARLINGTON GIRL DIES OF WOUNDS

LOIS FAYE ECHTENKAMP, 7, IS FATALLY WOUNDED IN GUN MISHAP

9-YEAR-OLD BROTHER OVERCOME BY GRIEF

PALL OF SADNESS IS CAST OVER ARLINGTON FRIDAY WHEN LITTLE GIRL DIES OF HEAD WOULDS RECEIVED AS RIFLE ACCIDENTALLY DISCHARGES.

Critically wounded Friday when a rifle in the hands of her nine-year-old brother suddenly discharged and sent a bullet crashing into her head, little Lois Faye Echtenkamp, 7, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Echtenkamp of near Arlington, died a few hours later.

The community of Arlington was stunned by the mishap-second accidental shooting involving children there in a week- and the tragedy cast a pall over activities there.

The boy, Dale, was overcome with grief when he learned that his sister, who had been his constant playmate, had succumbed to her injuries.

Death was caused by a hemorrhage which developed several hours after the shooting.

The children were playing with the gun in the wash house at the farm home at the time of the accident, not realizing that it was loaded. The discharge of the rifle sent a bullet into the girl’s chin, and it followed the jawbone and came out the side of her neck. She was given medical attention at once, and seemed to be recovering until the hemorrhages developed.

Lois Faye was born July 10, 1931. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Echtenkamp, and seven brothers and sisters, all living at home except Mrs. Obert Laaker of Bennington and Violet of Fremont.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the home and at 1:30 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
