J. L. Gillette, Ex-Mondamin Mayor Dies

Mondamin, Ia. (TNS),

John Leonard Gillette, 74, formerly mayor of Mondamin for four years died early Wednesday morning in his home in Mondamin.

He had been in ill health for some time.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gillette, he was born near Mondamin, February 1, 1875. He lived in the county all of his life.

He formerly farmed near here, but had lived in town the last 30 years. He was an employee of the Northwestern Railroad 28 years, retiring in 1945. In addition to operating the railroad pumping station, he was also a mail messenger for a number of years.

On March 21, 1900, Mr. Gillette married to Nella O. Morgareidge.

Mr. Gillette was a member of I. O. O. F. Lodge No. 382 there for 44 years. He was also member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 319, the Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America and the Christian Church. He was a past member of I. O. O. F. Encampment.

Besides his wife, Nellie, of Mondamin, he is also survived by two sons, Cyril of Council Bluffs and Merrill of Sheldon, Ia.; five daughters, Mrs. Walter Goodrich, Mrs. Mildred McCauley, Mrs. A. R. Pierson, all of Omaha, Mrs. Rex Cannon of Hamburg, Ia., and Mrs. Burl Murdock of Shelling, Ore.; a brother, Steve, Blair, Neb.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the Hennessey-Van Cleave Funeral Home in Missouri Valley.

Rites will be held at the Mondamin Christian Church at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Magnolla.
