McShane, Susan Ann (Hoefs)

February 8, 1958 - August 1, 2022

Susan Ann (Hoefs) McShane passed away surrounded by her family on August 1, 2022 at the age of 64. Susan was born to Virgil and Delores Hoefs of Pender, NE on February 8, 1958.

She was preceded in death by both parents. She is survived by husband Tom of Elkhorn, NE; sons, Ian (Alicia) of Elkhorn and Max (Megan) of Lincoln, NE; grandsons, Easton, Maverick, Ezra and Brooks McShane; granddaughter Rory McShane. She is also survived by brother Roger (Marlys) Hoefs; and sister Wanda (Ron) Kelly, all of Pender, NE; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and Todd Trautman of LaVista, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews and an uncountable number of friends.

Susan earned both bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She taught for 35 years in the Adams, NE, Fort Calhoun, NE, and Elkhorn, NE public schools in various elementary grades. Education was her passion and life's work, impacting numerous young lives. August was always her favorite time of the year, whether it was to get back in the classroom, or get her boys out of the house will remain unknown. She retired in 2013, but continued as a substitute teacher in Elkhorn for many years.

On June 12, 1982, Susan married Tom McShane. They had two sons, Ian and Max, and her joy in seeing how they matured into successful adults and loving husbands and fathers was boundless.

Susan's passions were family and cooking, which fit together seamlessly. Susan enjoyed nothing more than planning and cooking for any type of family gathering. She was meticulous in planning the gathering and preparing the meal. And those who were the beneficiaries of that planning and preparation felt the love Susan poured into it. Cooking for Susan was not just about treating family and friends, but a hobby, as well. She was an adventurous cook, and not afraid to try anything. Whether it was finding a new recipe in a cookbook, or inventing her own, she was happiest when the kitchen was overflowing with pots boiling, something simmering on the stove, and cooking paraphernalia strewn about the kitchen counters.

After two sons and three grandsons, Susan longed for a granddaughter she could buy "girly" clothes for, and when Rory came along, that longing was satisfied. Never much of a sports fan, she nonetheless loved going to Easton's, Maverick's and Ezra's soccer, baseball, football, and basketball games. And was looking forward to the day that Brooks would join his older brothers on the field or court.

Susan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, and friend. Those who knew and loved her, knew she loved them right back. The hole left in our hearts by her passing will eventually be filled, but we're all richer for having lived in her circle.

Arrangements are pending, but memorials may be made to the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation or to St. Patrick's School in Elkhorn.
