70 YEARS AGO (FEBR. 28, 1889)

Peter H. Benner, 85, warm friend of Alex Reed and himself former county clerk a number of years, died in Blair the evening of February 22, the day after Mr. Reed died. Mr. Benner had gained considerable fame in 1831 when serving as a constable in Philadelphia. He arrested a man for non-payment of debts, and too late learned his protesting prisoner was an attaché of the Danish minister to the United States. Benner, himself, was then haled into court after the minister had made complaints to the Secretary of State, and was fined $500 and given 60 days in jail.
