Stevens, Spencer

Spencer Stevens, born in Omaha, Nebraska, on July 14, 1943, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2023, in his home town of Omaha Nebraska.

Spencer was born to Everette Stevens and Gwynne Wormley and raised in Omaha, graduating from Benson High School in 1961. He attended Iowa State University and earned a bachelor's in chemical engineering.

Spencer joined the Navy and deployed to the Mediterranean on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt, serving as engineer officer underway and earning Junior Officer of the Year in 1967 for his leadership and management qualities.

After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, Spencer joined the Omaha Public Power District, where he served on the plant startup team and worked his to plant manager at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station. During this time he also earned a master's in mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering from Iowa State and the University of Nebraska.

He was president of an architect and engineering firm in Nebraska and received the award for Small Businessman of the Year in Omaha. In the early 2000's Spencer developed and implemented methods to use irradiation to kill food born pathogens and design improvements for railroad refueling stations until he retired in 2019.

Spencer had a love for community service as he served as men's Bible group leader at St. Johns Lutheran Church and as President of the board of the Methodist Hospital System.

Outside of the business world you would find Spencer outside on his Kubota tractor working on his acreage or biking through the countryside or down the beach streets of Ft. Lauderdale by the Sea, his favorite annual vacation spot.

Spencer was known to often say, this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Spencer is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joy Stevens; daughters Sommer (Andrew) Waite of Lincoln, NE and Vanessa (Matthew) Letcher of Coronado, CA; grandchildren: Gracia, Tula, Jack, Scout, Gwynne, Henry, and Mosley. Spencer is also survived by his brother Dr. Clarke Stevens of Omaha, Nebraska.

VISITATION: Wednesday, February 22, 2023, from 5 to 7pm, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home's 90th St Chapel. SERVICE: Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 10:00am Citylight Church - Midtown Location, 4383 Nicholas St., Omaha, NE 68131. BURIAL: Omaha National Cemetery, 1:30pm.
