John Gutschow, an old and respected citizen of this county, died at his home in this city on Friday, Oct. 29.

Mr. Gutschow was born in Clover Hoff, Mecklenburg Schwerine, Germany, March 18, 1835, making him past eighty years of age at his death.

He was married to Miss Sophia Sodomann in 1868 and to this union five children were born, all of whom with the wife survive him.

He came to this county in 1881 and has since with the exception of a few years spent at Decatur made this county his home.

The children who are left to mourn him are Mrs. Geo. Hineline of Blair, Mrs. John Hineline, of De Soto, Mrs. Minnie Kohler, of Tekamah, Mr. Fritz Gutschow of Decatur, and Miss Anna Gutschow of Blair. He also leaves a wife and two brothers, Joe and Chris, of Blair.

The funeral was held on Monday at 2 p.m. and the interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

John Gutschow Dead

The death of John Gutschow occurred at the family home in this city on last Friday the 29th ult. He was born in Germany in 1835 and after coming to this county in 1881, where three of his brothers, Joseph, Chris and Fritz, deceased, had preceded him and engaged in the occupation of farming. He leaves an aged wife and five children, Mrs. Geo. Hineline of Blair, Mrs. John Hineline of DeSoto, Mrs. Minnie Kohler of Tekamah, Mr. Fritz Gutschow of Decatur, and Miss Anna Gutschow, and two brothers, Joe and Chris of Blair.

Funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church in this city, Rev. A.W. Lambrecht preaching the funeral discourse, on Monday last at two o’clock and interment made in the Blair cemetery.

#3 The Pilot, November 10, 1915

John Gutschow died at his home in this city at 2:30 last Friday afternoon of heart trouble following a severe cold. He was past 80 years of age, and the tired old heart just ceased to beat. He was conscious up to the last two days, and passed quietly out of life into the sleep that is eternal for the body. The funeral was held at the German Lutheran church at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. A.W. Lambrecht officiating. He had been a member of the Lutheran church since his boyhood days. He was born in Claverhoff, Mecklenburge-Schwerin, Germany, March 15th, 1835, and was married at Dargune, Germany, March 16th, 1858. All but two of the five children were born there. They came to this country in 1881, coming direct to this city, where his two brothers, Joe and Chris were already located, having been in America 14 years. He settled on a farm near Tekamah. After spending eight years there they moved to this city and have made this their home ever since. Besides the wife he leaves one son, Fritz, who lives near Decatur, and four daughters, Mrs. George Hineline of this city, Mrs. John Hineline, of DeSoto township, Mrs. R.B. Kohler, of Tekamah and Miss Anna, who lives at home. Also two brothers, Jos. and Chris. Gutschow of this city, fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a good husband and father, and therefore a good citizen and neighbor. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends.
