Mrs. Halstead Dies

Long illness proved fatal last Thursday to Mrs. Ellen Halstead, 79, a resident of Washington County about seventy years. Widow of Clement L. Halstead, she died at the family home, 9th and Nebraska Street.

Funeral services were held at Campbell Mortuary Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Sidney L. McCaig of First Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed in Blair Cemetery.

Sarah Ellen Gilliland was born June 5, 1867, in Wapello County, Iowa. As a little girl she came to Nebraska with her parents and settled at Grand Island for a time. Then, they moved to DeSota where she attended school and grew to womanhood. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead, for a time after their marriage, lived at Glenwood, Iowa, after coming to Blair, the family home since. Mr. Halstead died in 1931.

Surviving Mrs. Halstead are three sons, Everett of Moose Lake, Minnesota, Floyd of Cozad, Nebraska, and Zeke of Blair, and one daughter, Mrs. Sam Steele or Gladys of Blair. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Leech of Omaha, and Mrs. Clara Allen of Los Angeles; three brothers, William and Albert Gilliland of Blair, and George Gilliland of Elgin, Illinois; ten grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

Sarah Ellen Gilliland was born June 5, 1867 in Wapelo County, Iowa. She died at her home in Blair November 21, 1946 at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 16 days.

As a little girl she came to Nebraska in a covered wagon with her pioneer family. They settled near Grand Island for a time, later moved to the DeSoto.

As a woman she was united in marriage to Clement L. Halstead. To this union eight children were born. While the children were small the family lived near Glenwood, Iowa. Later they moved to the vicinity of Blair, Nebraska where Mrs. Halstead lived till the time of her death. In poor health the past few years, she had been patiently and faithfully cared for by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Zeke Halstead. Her husband preceded her in death in 1931.

Surviving her passing are three sons, Everett L. of Mooselake, Minnesota; Floyd E., Cozad; Zeke C., Blair; one daughter, Gladys (Mrs. Sam Steele), Blair; two sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Leach, Omaha; Mrs. Clara Allen, Los Angeles; three brothers, William and Albert Gilliland, Blair; and George Gilliland, Elgin, Illinois. Ten grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nephews and nieces and many friends.
