John A. Iverson

John A. Iverson, son of John A. and Emily Louise (Shumaker) Iverson, was born in Plattsmouth, Nebraska on Aug. 6, 1905. He was educated in the Plattsmouth schools and graduated with honors from Plattsmouth High School in 1925.

Shortly thereafter, he began his career in government service in Washington, D.C., being employed at first in the United States Patent Office and later in the General Accounting Office.

Concurrently, he was a student at George Washington University. Soon after locating in Washington, he enlisted in the National Guard. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he transferred into the Air Force and began his tour of duty as a second lieutenant, being based at Wright-Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, carrying a special responsibility in the United Nations Lend-Lease program.

After the close of hostilities, he returned to Washington D.C. and served as a budget specialist officer in the Pentagon. He retired from active duty in 1968, moving later to Naples, Fla., where he was active in the Retired Officers Assn.

Col. Iverson was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He was a lifetime member of the Plattsmouth United Presbyterian Church.

In 1942, he and Mary Elizabeth O’Connor of Washington, D.C., and Newport, R.I. were married.

Col. Iverson is survived by his wife, 1600 Fourth St. So., Naples, Fla.; by brothers Rudolf F. and Paul F. of Plattsmouth; sisters Helen E. Thimgan of Plattsmouth, Hazel K. Thimgan of Springfield and Margaret L. Steiner of Chicago, Ill.

Graveside services will be held at the Iverson plot in the Fort Calhoun, Neb. Cemetery in the immediate future.

The family suggests that memorials may be given to the Plattsmouth Public Library.
