Leonard C. Gaines, 78, of 914 East 10th Street, Fremont, prominent realtor, died suddenly Thursday afternoon, May 24, 1951 at the Dodge County Hospital. He was taken there by the fire department rescue squad following a heart attack at his home.

Funeral services were conducted from the Fred Bader Funeral Home to the Methodist Church in Elk City at 2:30pm Saturday. Burial was in the Elk City cemetery. Rev. Frank Carver officiated.

Honorary pall bearers were Frank Middaugh, Robert Leiehrs, Fred Richards, William Best, Dr. P.L. Cady and Frank Dvorak.

Active pall bearers were his nephews: Stephen Gaines, Carson Gaines, Lynn Eakin, Harold Gaines, Wendel Ludwig and Donald Crink.

Mr. Gaines had been in the real estate business in Fremont since he moved there in 1919 from the Arlington, Nebraska community. The Gaines lived in Arlington from 1905 to 1919 where he was a buyer of horses and purchased many horses for the army.

Born at Odell, Illinois, May 18, 1873, Mr. Gaines moved in 1881 to Elk City, Nebraska where his father was a Methodist minister. He was married to Bethiah Cowles of Valley, Nebraska on February 22, 1897. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Odd Fellows lodges.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Jerome Jerman of West Point, Nebraska; Mrs. E.R. Oetting, Menomonie, Wisconsin, and Madge Gaines of Fremont, Nebraska and two grandchildren.
