Omaha – John Frederick Prochnow, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away August 1st, 2023 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 89. John was born in Omaha on June 10, 1934 to Albert and Alice Prochnow of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. He was raised in Fort Calhoun until moving to Omaha in 1958 where he lived for the remainder of his life. He married Maxine in 1958 and went on to have 6 children. They later divorced.

John grew up farming near Fort Calhoun and began driving a tractor at age 10. After moving to Omaha, he worked in refrigeration for most of his career. For many years he owned and operated his own refrigeration business and was an independent contractor for Pepsi responsible for installing and repairing Pepsi equipment throughout the local area. Growing up his kids enjoyed the perks of always having cases of Pepsi products in the house. He spent the last 20 years of his career working at St. Joseph’s Hospital until his retirement.

John enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and working in the garage. He shared many happy childhood memories of time spent outside with his .22 rifle. Starting when his kids were young, he took many trips to South Dakota with his family to fish for walleye. He also loved driving and taking care of his cars and trucks, usually a Chevy pickup or an Oldsmobile sedan, and was particularly fond his blue 1968 Cutlass 442. John loved to work with his hands and was never one to sit still. Well into his 80’s you could find him spending long hours in his garage working on his many hobbies and maintaining the house which he owned for over 50 years. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and was more than willing to play with the little ones or share a piece of chocolate.

He is preceded in death by his parents Albert & Alice and siblings Albert & Lucille. He is survived by his sister Beth (Bill) Burdess and children John (Tammy), Dan, Cheryl, Bryan, Shelly, Jeff (Rema), as well as 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many family and friends. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him and greatly missed.
