Died: Sept. 12, 2023, Omaha, Neb.

Preceded in death by: wife, Monica Smith; first wife, Phyllis; parents, Cecil and Eva Smith; brothers, John and Jerry; granddaughter, Cheryl Hayes; great-great granddaughter, Lexi Carole Suverkrubbe.

Survived by: daughter, Nancy (Rich) Johnson, Fort Calhoun; sons, James (Karen) Smith, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Larry (Julie) Smith, Blair, Neb., Bob (Sharon) Smith, Blair, Mike (Joyce) Smith, Fort Calhoun, David (Annie) Smith, Kennard, Neb.; brother, Paul (Jan) Smith, Dunlap, Iowa; sister-in-law, MaryLou Smith, The Villages, Fla.; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

VISITATION AND ROSARY SERVICE: 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, with Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, also at St. John’s.

INTERMENT: Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Born: July 8, 1928, Dunlap, IA.

Died: September 12, 2023, Omaha, NE.

Edward James Smith was born on July 8, 1928 in Dunlap, Iowa to Cecil and Eva Smith. Ed grew up in Dunlap, Iowa. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School along with his three younger brothers. Ed was married to Phyllis Smith in July 1949. The couple had two children, Nancy and James. Ed worked a small farm east of Dunlap at that time. After Phyllis’ death, Ed moved his family to Dunlap. There he purchased a gas station and ran it for several years.

Ed was married to Monica Higgins April 28, 1956 in Dunlap. The couple moved to Blair, NE. They had four sons: Lawrence, Robert, Michael and David. Over the years, Ed worked as a mechanic and heavy machine operator. He later retired from Washington County.

Ed will be remembered for his cooking on Sunday morning and his open-door policy. He was dedicated to the church and enjoyed camping, fishing, mowing and pushing snow. Of course, he always enjoyed a good piece of fried chicken.

Ed was preceded in death by: wife, Monica Smith, first wife, Phyllis, parents, Cecil and Eva Smith, brothers, John and Jerry, granddaughter, Cheryl Hayes, great-great granddaughter, Lexi Carole Suverkrubbe. Ed is survived by: daughter, Nancy (Rich) Johnson, Ft. Calhoun, sons, James (Karen) Smith, Council Bluffs, IA, Larry (Julie) Smith, Blair, NE, Bob (Sharon) Smith, Blair, Mike (Joyce) Smith, Ft. Calhoun, David (Annie) Smith, Kennard, NE, brother, Paul (Jan) Smith, Dunlap, IA, sister-in-law, MaryLou Smith, The Villages, FL, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and many extended family and friends.
