Appomattox Campaign- March 29 – April 9, 1865

At the time of surrender in 9 April 1865, only 39 members of the 846 remained of the regiment.

He was in 23 Engagements. Served under General Stonewall Jackson and was Standard Bearer to General Robert E. Lee at time of Surrender.

Note: Melvin, Isaac McCann and John M. Van Huss served together. Henry Beecher McCann (Isaac's son) married Dicey Rebeca Arnold (Melvin's daughter) in 1893. John Van Huss was Melvin's brother-in-law.

Melvin and Charles Weed (also buried in Kennard Cemetery) were both at: Battle of Sailor's Creek (April 6, 1865) and Appomattox Court House when General Lee surrendered (April 9, 1865). They both wore different colored uniforms.
