Edward Dean "Ed" Vogel

Edward Dean Vogel was born on Saturday, September 22, 1934, to Kenneth and Charlotte "Lottie" (Petersen) Vogel in West Point, Nebraska. He passed away October 9, 2023, at Meridian Gardens in Columbus, Nebraska.

Ed grew up in Oakland, Nebraska, graduating from Oakland High School in 1952. He married the love of his life, Janet Marie Mitchell of Craig, Nebraska on November 7, 1954. Together they raised their four children in Herman, Nebraska. Ed was devoted to his wife of 68 years and never missed an opportunity to be with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ed worked at Westinghouse for 25 years, coming home only to eat supper, and then off to work at Miller's Mobil gas station in Herman. He retired from Burt County Co-Op, where he spent his days delivering fuel to local farmers. Ed also loved delivering the rural Omaha World Herald and involved each one of his kids, teaching them many life lessons and core values as well as making numerous fond memories.

Ed served in the Nebraska National Guard from 1952 to 1958 and was a member of the American Legion of Herman, Jackson Peck Post #274. He was actively involved in Boy Scouts and accompanied his sons on many campouts and paper drives and served as Cub Master in his sons' earlier scouting days. Additionally, Ed served his community on the Herman Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad for 20 years and was also a member of the Herman Planning Commission.

Ed was a man of many talents however humble in nature. In his early years, he enjoyed beekeeping, extracting honey and made many trips to Sioux Bee Honey in Sioux City, Iowa to sell his barrels of pure gold.

In his spare time, Ed loved to go camping with Janet, her mom and dad and many other family members who were always welcome. Ed loved the great outdoors, fishing, bird watching, or just walking in the early mornings at DeSoto Bend. He enjoyed bowling with the men's and mixed leagues in Tekamah and escorted Janet's bowling team to various bowling tournaments. He had a love for music and shared his sense of humor with those around him. Ed will always be remembered as a quiet, compassionate man with deep seated beliefs in God and family.

He is survived by his Wife, Janet Vogel of Herman; Children: Roger (June) Vogel of Fremont, NE, Vickie (Terry) Boss of Columbus, John (Betsy) Vogel of Battlefield, MO and Deann (Scott) Engberg of Omaha, Nebraska; 8 Grandchildren: Matt Vogel, Koryn (Kurt) Hansen, Mitch Vogel, Tonya (Rob) Runion, Jodie (John) Wachal, Curt Maly and Carlyn Ulrike, Steve (Heather) Maly, Mark (Hillary) Maly; 12 Great Grandchildren: Caiden, Kenley, Cody Hansen, Nolan and Carter Runion, Emma, Madison, and Riley Wachal, Alexis, Finley and Jack Maly and Aurelia Maly; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Charlotte "Lottie" (Petersen) Vogel; father- and mother-in-law, John and Helen Mitchell; sister, Elaine "Sue" Gourley; and brother-in-law, Jon Mitchell.
