In Loving Memory of Jon Drew Tripp

Born September 14, 1963 Omaha, Nebraska ~ Died December 7, 2023 Omaha, Nebraska

From Jon's Grandchildren, compiled by Destinee Freeman

Today, my family gathered in his hospital room around his bed just to be present with him. And to be honest, I had a hard time being sad. Out of all the people I know, I think our grandpa was the MOST full of joy. He was good at having fun...sometimes at the expense of others (please see: creepy clown mask hiding in the woods) and sometimes not very safely (please also see: I let a tiny bomb explode in my hand), but gosh darn it, if he was going to be doing something he was going to make it a good time! In stoicism, they say that death itself does not cause misery but that the fear of death does...Our grandpa was truly on of those people who knew life was fleeting and was going to do his best to enjoy it anyways.

We will miss our grandpa dearly. We will miss the mischievous snicker he made when he thought he was getting away with something and the way his whole belly jiggled when he laughed. We will miss his presence at everything, because he always knew when to show up, even if he didn't know how. We will miss the way he softened like butter when it came to animals, and the way he melted specifically for his granddaughters. And we appreciated the effort he gave to teaching us to find joy in the little things, and how not to take life (or myself) too seriously.

Jon was not a perfect man--he taught me a lot about forgiveness, accountability, and integrity. He was the first adult to teach me the importance of owning up to mistakes and was never afraid to humble himself to make an apology when he did mess up. Lessons I take for granted every day, doing the work that we do.

He lived fast and loved hard and had a beautiful life. And he will be SO missed.
